A Tour of Philip Roth’s Newark

We often get asked if we offer such a tour, or if we know someone who does. Years ago, in 2005, there was a bus tour, and Roth himself was a passenger on the bus. We own one printed copy which was produced by the Newark Preservation and Landmarks Committee in association with the City of Newark, the Newark Public Library, and the Newark Public Schools.

About a year ago, a professor at Rutgers-Newark, Mary Rizzo, visited the library where she was asked to provide pointers about creating compelling exhibits to staff working in the library’s special collections departments. During one, we learned about StoryMaps, a (free) digital storytelling platform. It took a while to put it together because we were juggling other tasks, but it looks like we’re finally ready to make the announcement.

We’ve compiled landmarks from Roth’s childhood, along with those mentioned in some of his novels, Goodbye, Columbus, I Married a Communist, and The Plot Against America. Please take a look!
